Far Cry 4: Story Fixed

If you don’t care about video games, don’t bother clicking through.

How hard is it to write a character with a motivation?

Apparently, very fucking hard.

Meet Ajay Ghale, protagonist of Far Cry 4 (yes I damn well play video games, and I will not apologize because you probably do something equally dumb with at least some of your time; it’s not like you’re Cory Doctorow (that may not make sense to you, but I’ve met Cory, and he works fucking hard all the fucking time)), a character who will literally climb a mountain just because it’s there.

I’m going to assume that a) you’re familiar with the game and it’s story, and b) that you don’t care about spoilers.

The biggest problem with Ajay “Climb That Mountain” Ghale is that he has no clear, solid motivation for anything he does. Yahtzee covered all of this in his review; you can go watch it, I’ll wait.

Now that we’re all caught up, I’m going to fix the story for you.

Here’s the fix: Mohan doesn’t kill Lakshmana (Ajay’s half-sister) when she’s a baby, because, spoiler alert A DEAD SISTER AJAY NEVER KNEW IS NOT VERY FUCKING DRAMATIC. Of course, Mohan is about to kill Lakshmana, so Ishwari is still forced to kill him and then flee to the U.S., but with both her children in tow instead of just the one with the personality of a medium-sized cardboard box. When she dies, Ajay and Lakshmana return to Kyrat to spread her ashes, as per her wishes. Pagan kidnaps them upon their arrival, then the rebels free Ajay, but they fail to free Lakshmana.

Presto: Ajay has a motivation. He needs to save his sister. He needs to get to Pagan to do it. Instead of wandering around the map doing random crap because it’s there, or because he has map-marker OCD or something, he takes these missions because they’ll make him stronger, and they’ll win him allies. If Pagan has his sister, he has a FUCKING REASON FOR DOING SHIT.

But my plan to fix Far Cry 4’s story doesn’t end there! No, no, my friend, there is a whole Act II to think about. And I can hear you saying, “But, Will, that’s the plot of Far Cry 3, mostly.”

To which I respond, “SHUT THE FUCK UP, I KNOW THAT. I AM NOT WITHOUT A BRAIN. TRUST ME, FOR I HAVE A FUCKING PLAN.”

Graciously, I do not amend that statement with, “WHICH IS MORE THAN UBISOFT HAS, APPARENTLY.”

At the end of Act I, Ajay and his allies storm the fortress where Lakshmana is being held by Pagan. Ajay finds his sister and her father, but Lakshmana has been changed by her time in captivity. She knows things. Pagan’s been whispering in her ear, and she’s been twisted by imprisonment. Lakshmana knocks her brother down, takes his gun, and kills Pagan in order to take his place as dictator of Kyrat.

See, it’s her birthright. The whole country. Kyrat was her father’s, but he was evil. Lakshmana believes she can fix Kyrat, she knows she can.

But only if the Golden Path is willing to accept her as their leader.

Of course, they aren’t. They burn the fucking fortress down. Ajay must choose between saving Amita or Sabal or someone, or escaping with Lakshmana. He chooses to save a life. Before his sister escapes, she tells him she does not want him hurt, but if he sides with the rebels, she will be unable to protect him from her men.

Oh, noes!

Act II is then all about Ajay trying to get to his sister. Now he has a good reason to dig into his family’s history, to uncover the past, which, as it stands in the product Ubisoft has given us, is about as relevant to the game as the eighteenth Tolkein appendix is to enjoying The Hobbit (the book, idiot). Maybe he can find the secret that will bring his sister back around. Maybe he can find a journal, a letter, someone who knew his family, anything that will help him convince her to step down and come home.

Ajay wants to save his sister, but the Golden Path wants to destroy her. After all, she’s Pagan’s daughter, and the newest tin-pot dictator. Can he trust them? Can they trust him? Are his allies his enemies? His enemies his allies? Can he save his sister, or will he have to kill her?

FUCKING TENSION. FUCKING REASONS TO DO SHIT. THIS IS NOT HARD, UBISOFT.
